Mughal-e-Azam Remake: Amitabh Bachchan As Akbar, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan As Anarkali - How A South Filmmaker Wanted To Cast Big B's Family!
Amitabh Bachchan's family as the cast of Mughal-e-Azam remake once came to the mind of a South producer but it went ahead!
Certain movies achieve a level of timelessness that makes the thought of remaking them almost sacrilegious. One such film is the 1960 epic "Mughal-e-Azam," directed by K. Asif. This historical drama, starring Prithviraj Kapoor as Emperor Akbar, Dilip Kumar as Prince Salim, and Madhubala as Anarkali, is so iconic that it's difficult to envision any other actors in these roles. Their performances are deeply ingrained in the collective memory of Indian cinema, making any attempt to recreate this magic seem impossible. However, in a surprising revelation, filmmaker Mehul Kumar shared an interesting anecdote about a proposal to remake "Mughal-e-Azam" with the legendary Bachchan family. According to Mehul, a South Indian producer envisioned casting Amitabh Bachchan as Emperor Akbar, Jaya Bachchan as Jodha Bai, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Anarkali, and Abhishek Bachchan as Prince Salim. This ambitious idea, however, was met with skepticism. When asked if Amitabh Bachchan had been approached about this project, it was revealed that Amitabh himself suggested the producer consult Mehul Kumar first. In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Mehul explained that he advised the producer against the remake, citing the inevitable comparisons to the original masterpiece. The producer relayed this message to Amitabh, who agreed with Mehul’s assessment, thus shelving the project. The Bachchan family, meanwhile, continues to be a focal point of media attention. Recently, they were spotted at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding ceremony. Amitabh, Jaya, Abhishek, Shweta, and other family members made a grand entrance and posed for the cameras. Interestingly, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan arrived separately with her daughter Aaradhya, sparking rumors of discord within the family. This speculation was further fueled when Abhishek Bachchan liked a divorce-related post on Instagram, leaving fans and followers questioning the state of his marriage to Aishwarya. Despite the rumors, neither Abhishek nor Aishwarya has publicly commented on the matter.
On the professional front, Amitabh Bachchan remains a powerhouse in the industry. His latest film, "Kalki 2898 AD," has been a box office success, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan. This movie's success underscores Amitabh's enduring appeal and his ability to adapt to contemporary cinema while retaining his iconic status.
